- What do you mean by "serious" math? From your examples, I guess you are
- referring to computationally intensive tasks. Some people do spend time
- with these things; I note that a matrix solver program recently appeared
- in C=Hacking. You might write to my friend George Taylor (aa601@ccn.cs.dal.ca)
- as he works on these kinds of things -- I think he can generate the mandelbrot
- set in under six seconds on a C64 (zooming in on a particular region is another
- matter entirely ;-)
-
- If, on the other hand, you mean real math, then we should talk sometime :).
- I have used my 64 and 128 to calculate various things related to discrete
- mappings, e.g. orbit diagrams. I also attempted to calculate the Feigenbaum
- constant, but need a new algorithm. At times I have used the computer to
- integrate differential equations and to solve some transcendental equations.
- (I remember one equation in particular which I found in a calculus textbook.
- I think it was a third order polynomial in x and y, and there was something
- really strange about it. I think I finally figured out that the set of points
- satisfying the equation was a smooth curve plus a single point!)
-
- I am also interested in two and three dimensional geometry, which means I like
- to think up 2D and 3D graphics algorithms. (If you want to flatter me you can
- read about them in C=Hacking ;-). Come to think of it, my next, most ambitious
- ever project in 3D graphics on the C64 will be appearing here very soon, and
- it's a doozy.
